MANCHESTER – Bolton Council has given approval for a major new Next Home and Garden Store at Middlebrook Retail and Leisure Park, one of the most successful retail parks in the UK; following a successful planning submission by leading development and infrastructure consultants Peter Brett Associates (PBA).
The freestanding three-storey building will provide over 8,600 sq m of retail space. The development represents a substantial investment of over £12m, helping to boost the local economy and providing an important opportunity to regenerate and upgrade this pivotal location, with strategic access into Middlebrook.
The Next store will be a mixed retail format and will include men’s, women’s and children’s fashions alongside a wide range of furniture, DIY and garden products. “Next has chosen this site at Middlebrook as one of only a select number of locations in the country to deliver their new Home and Garden centre store concept,” said Carol Clarke, Senior Associate Planner at PBA. “They will retain both their Bolton town centre stores, but consolidate their existing operations at Middlebrook into this new outlet, bringing significant investment into the area, retaining existing jobs and generating major job creation and training opportunities.”
Overall, the store will provide around 220 jobs. “We are extremely pleased that Members of Bolton Council voted to approve our application,” said a Next spokesman. “This reaffirms the ability of Next to deliver a variety of store types in Bolton in a range of destinations, providing increased consumer choice at Middlebrook.”
PBA advised Next on planning, highways, and flood risk, and undertook a pre-application consultation that generated 100 per cent support from local residents and stakeholders.
The new store has been designed by SiCa Architects.
