Peter Brett Associates appointed by Crossrail to review the movement of construction materials on London’s canal network

Peter Brett Associates LLP (PBA) has been appointed by Crossrail (CRL) to undertake a review of the opportunities to move construction materials using London’s canal network.

The work builds on Crossrail’s strategy to maximise the use of water transport for delivery of construction materials and the removal of construction material and waste.

Philip Wright, LLP Director for PBA, said: "The use of water where appropriate to complement rail and road options not only reduces environmental impact, but also reduces construction risk by introducing flexibility in the transport options available."

The work will initially focus on the use of the Grand Union Canal to transport tunnel linings to the Westbourne Park tunnel portal. At the same time, opportunities to move materials along other water routes will be investigated.

"This commission complements our work in London and elsewhere in the UK to research, promote and develop water-borne freight," Philip continued.

Since 2007, PBA has played a pivotal role in identifying and drawing attention to the potential of using London’s network of waterways. Following on from research supported by British Waterways and TfL, PBA prepared the business case for obtaining £18.9m in grant funding for the Three Mills Lock water control structure and has recently completed a study of freight potential on the River Trent.

Philip added: "This work demonstrates that genuine joined up thinking is being applied to the transport needs of a substantial construction project as part of a sustainable and integrated supply chain. We are we are delighted to be involved closely again to support such a major project in London."
