Engineering design from PBA helped to regenerate Taunton’s historic Castle Green.
The overall scheme, by LDA Design, has transformed this neglected centrepiece into a valuable public space in which pedestrians take priority. PBA produced designs and solutions which avoided over-engineering on this sensitive site, which lies within a Scheduled Ancient Monument that includes Taunton Castle, a Grade 1 Listed Building, and is surrounded by other listed buildings enclosing a space that has a Saxon chapel, burial ground, barns and other historic structures extending underground.
The construction contract managed by PBA included a new, glass-panelled, concrete bridge that floats across the castle’s grass moat. PBA also managed the demolition of the old car park and replaced it with a large grass lawn and shared open space. The raised lawn is surrounded with pre-cast concrete planters and bespoke oak benches, both manufactured by a locally sourced supplier.
The design team has reduced the whole life cost of the project by specifying clutter-free, hard landscaped areas constructed of high quality, long-life natural stone paving. The maintenance regime will ensure the quality of the finish is maintained in future.
As a result of this project, PBA was shortlisted for the prestigious Association for Consultancy and Engineering’s (ACE) Centenary Engineering Excellence Awards 2013.
