Chester Home Zone,
Chester, Cheshire, UK

Producing greater results through dynamic collaboration

The regeneration and redevelopment of three residential streets on the eastern edge of Chester has resulted in the creation of the city’s first Home Zone - a street or group of streets that has been re-designed to provide a shared space for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles.

The Chester Home Zone lies at the intersection of three streets situated in a residential community of high-density housing which lacked open, public spaces. The principles, key objectives and concepts that provided a framework for the scheme were set out through consultation with Cheshire County and Chester City councils. A Home Zone development was the logical solution to meet these criteria.

Home Zones convert urban areas into people-centred, public environments. In Chester, the plan was to introduce a community park and children’s play area. By working at a grass roots level, input from focus groups and consultations helped define the project. Selection of everything from playground equipment to landscaping came from a partnership with the community. The project had an enormous level of transparency and used a marquee on the site to display designs, artist’s impressions and construction material choices. This two-way communication with local residents produced community ownership as well as an award winning development that met the public’s needs.
