Lewisham Gateway,
South East London, UK

Reversing poor planning to unlock a community’s potential

Peter Brett Associates LLP (PBA) is putting sustainable and renewable energy solutions at the heart of Lewisham Gateway’s development – an urban regeneration that will transform the town centre.

The proposed development will create a mixed-use area with high quality buildings, public realm and spectacular contemporary architecture. It includes up to 850 new homes, shops, cafés, restaurants, leisure facilities, high quality office space and a substantially enhanced transport interchange.

We developed an outline energy strategy for the development to meet the Mayor of London’s London Plan and, specifically, to address the GLA requirement to deliver a 10% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions for the buildings within the development through the incorporation of on-site renewable technologies.

Following GLA revisions, a 20% reduction in CO2 emissions was required. We liaised directly with the London Borough of Lewisham and the developers’ legal representatives to agree a suitable strategy to meet this target. We successfully negotiated a solution: a 10% reduction in CO2 emissions through using on-site renewables and a further 10% reduction through energy efficiency measures, on-site renewable energy, low carbon technologies and improvements to the thermal performance of the building fabric.
