Raising Hastings sustainability profile to attract enviro-technology businesses
Sea Space aim to deliver 17,000m2 of truly sustainable business park to attract enviro-technology businesses to Hastings and raise the city’s sustainability profile. Peter Brett Associates LLP (PBA)’s many services are supporting the park’s development.
The business park’s location, adjacent a site of special scientific interest (SSSI), presented many challenges to potential development. The SSSI supports wildlife as well as flora which is unique to the area and is maintained by underground streams. We assessed the potential to harvest rainwater, noting particularly the effect on groundwater regime and the important underground streams in the SSSI area.
Working closely with the architect and structural engineer, we came up with solutions to reduce energy, water, CO2 emissions and waste generation to meet, and in some cases, exceed targets.
Our energy strategy will provide energy savings through the orientation, massing and design of the buildings to reduce the need for artificial lighting, mechanical ventilation and cooling. We also advised on improving the natural ventilation strategy through the use of wind cowls, as the site offers a reliable and significant wind resource. This reliable wind source provided the opportunity to incorporate a large scale wind turbine.
Finally, we participated in the public consultation process, giving workshops and presentations to local residents and colleges.
