Basic Assessment for ESKOM Distribution Powerlines and Substations, Northwest Province, South Africa
Creating value through functionality and form
Two South African mining houses are expanding their business and require more power to supply new and existing mines. We were able to demonstrate that the powerlines would be environmentally feasible.
The Xstrata Rhovan Vanadium Mine and African Platinum Mine requested new substations (Mamogale and Makolokwe substations, respectively) from Eskom, the national electricity provider. To meet this demand, Eskom Distribution decided to construct an 88kV distribution power lines from an existing substation to two new substations.
In a joint venture with Margen Industrial Services, we were appointed to undertake the EIA and assist with the basic technical assessment of this project. In accordance with new environmental regulations, a basic assessment (rather than full impact assessment) is required for activities that are regarded as having a lesser impact on the environment, due to their size.
Several specialist studies, site visits and a systematic public participation process were run concurrently to determine environmental sensitivities on alternative routes and substation sites. The final report was submitted to the National Department of Environmental Affairs & Tourism as well as the provincial authority. Authorisation was received in August 2008.
Did you know?
We bring thorough investigations and a strong background and understanding of the issues affecting our environment to each project. Not only were we able to help our client meet their expansion objectives, we were able to demonstrate that the selected power line routes and substations will have limited impact on the environment.
