B&Q – Former Manton Colliery,
Worksop, UK
A truly economically and environmentally sustainable development
B&Q have built an 80,000m2 Regional Distribution Centre (RDC) as part of their national distribution network. As part of the development process B&Q’s property manager commissioned PBA to consider the feasibility and outline costs of reinstating disused rail facilities on the site at Manton.
If commercially and operationally viable, the use of the existing assets would enable B&Q to move goods via rail as well as road. Combining our expert rail, logistics and structural design support we advised on the status of the existing rail connection from the Retford to Sheffield railway line and the condition of a critical rail bridge crossing over the B6040 near the site.
Our examination revealed that this railway line would be feasible to reinstate and could be “safeguarded”, pending further investigation. We subsequently undertook a more detailed investigation into the possibility of providing a rail distribution network from the port of Immingham to the facility.
