Lewisham Gateway,
South East London, UK

Reversing poor planning to unlock a community’s potential

Lewisham town centre has suffered from years of low investment and currently lacks a quality environment for its residents. Now our expertise in sustainable transport solutions is offering an innovative scheme that serves the needs of residents and brings new life to the neighbourhood as part of a major regeneration process.

Although there is excellent public transport in the town centre and 70% of people in the area travel by foot, the current streetscape of Lewisham Gateway inhibits pedestrian movement, making connections more difficult. With major roads and a dominant roundabout severing many routes, it is empty of quality public space. The poor condition of this location is reflected by it being included in the Mayor of London’s ten pilot projects for ‘making space for Londoners’.

Our client is promoting the community’s regeneration by shifting focus to the people in the environment. Traffic will be rerouted into a new streetscape that allows for removal of the roundabout and improves conditions for pedestrians. This site will be transformed into a mixed-use development with new public spaces and a new riverside park which will act as the heart of the town centre. A car-free, pedestrian route will create direct access from the town centre to bus, train and DLR stations. Our solutions will create a better environment for residents, laying the foundation for future economic and social improvement.
