A228 Leybourne & West Malling Bypass,
West Malling, Kent, UK

Robust change management and the maintenance of good team relationships

Excellent project management played the key role in achieving a successful outcome for the project team, as the major A228 highway scheme took 17 years to deliver. Robust change management and the maintenance of good team relationships were vital to ensure client and team objectives were met.

The A228 is an important primary route in Kent serving many existing communities as well as new and proposed housing and development areas. The Leybourne Bypass West Malling plays a key role in reducing congestion and is a vital link to the major mixed use development at Kings Hill. Funded through a public-private partnership, this 17 year project faced many road blocks that nearly stopped the scheme before completion.

The project’s success was due to our fundamental ability to deliver projects and adapt to whatever challenges present themselves. When the public spoke at the two inquires held, we listened. When transport policy shifted from ‘predict and provide’ to ‘managing network capacity’, we redesigned our scheme. When governments and funding regimes changed hands, we pushed on.

By rethinking, reworking and resubmitting over the long life of the project, we were able to progress the scheme and, in 200 months, complete it.
