Market Place, Reading Town Centre, Reading, Berkshire, UK
Making Reading green, safe and connected
Market Place, in the heart of Reading, has been regenerated as part of the Council’s Local Transport Plan (LTP). The improved, high quality public space is just one of Reading Borough Council’s (RBC’s) plans to improve the town – making it connect, making it green, making it safe and making it flourish.
This is the latest public realm and environmental improvement scheme and is part of RBC’s wider vision for the region’s transport which focuses on integrating transport and urban design strategies with town planning and regeneration.
Enhancements include the creation of a high quality public space, linking existing pedestrian zones, new pedestrian crossings and cycle facilities, the restoration of the historic Simeon Monument, enhancements to bus stops including real-time passenger information, the re-surfacing of footpaths and provision of new street furniture, lighting and signage.
The regeneration of Market Place received highly commended status for the “Urban Transport Design Award” and was recommended as an innovative Transport and Urban Design scheme.

The simple designs and high quality materials used in this regeneration, such as Buff Yorkstone and granite, pay tribute to the area’s historic buildings such as the Simeon monument and St Laurence’s Church, anchoring it in the past whilst providing facilities for the future.
