Mereham New Community
Cambridge, UK
A truly economically and environmentally sustainable development
A hotly-contested new development planned for 680ha of greenfield land near Cambridge provides the perfect opportunity for involving the principles of sustainability in the framing of a project. Peter Brett Associates LLP (PBA) is providing renewable energy, flooding, geotechnical and sustainability consultancy to help realize this truly sustainable development.
The site comprises three areas: 250ha of wetland, 180ha of agricultural land, with the remaining 250ha becoming a mixed-use residential area containing 5,100 houses. The 180ha of farmland is intended for community use and will give future residents the opportunity to truly engage with their surroundings, including food production and energy supply. Biomass, used as fuel to heat homes, will be grown in quick-growing, managed crops.
Our advice has spanned the planning process - from a sustainability assessment demonstrating exemplar status, to an entire sustainability strategy for the development. Through our close involvement and expert advice on sustainability and flooding and drainage we have been able to assist our client in producing the essence of a truly sustainable community in a very sustainable location, with social and environmental benefits.
