Nowe Miasto Development,
Kraków, Poland
Blending tradition and innovation to increase functionality and land value
In a move toward progress, anything deemed old fashioned is often disregarded. Seeing beyond this philosophy, we recognised the value of integrating older, functional elements with new, modern improvements.
Background
The site of Nowe Miasto is located within the city of Krakow’s central transportation hub, an area that had fallen into disrepair. An overall increase in the city’s general prosperity gave rise to the city’s regeneration as well as private car ownership. A comprehensive transport strategy that balanced traffic increases whilst promoting accessibility to the station and area was needed.
Solutions
We integrated older public transport elements whilst addressing the increase in congestion. The environment surrounding the station was improved by creating a transport model that gave priority to public, cycle and pedestrian transport whilst preventing through automobile traffic. The resulting plan was a first of its kind scheme for Poland that revitalised the traditional central transport hub whilst incorporating modern ideas of pedestrian and public transport.
