Reading Station Hill Interchange & Public Realm Scheme, Reading, Berkshire, UK

Engineering solutions that reflect the needs of the site

In 2000, Reading Borough Council produced a twenty year plan for the town’s development. Although visionary, it required improvements to make it realistically achievable and truly future-proofed. Peter Brett Associates LLP (PBA) was able to provide the transport knowledge that would help realise these goals.

Reading City 2020: A Vision of the Future, is a model followed by councils around the country. It set out plans for healthy living, growth and economic diversity. Yet, it did not fully account for the pressures on transport systems that this growth would make.

Seeing the need for a large scale transport scheme, our study of the area in and around Reading identified road, rail, and bus network capacities. Additionally, a transport model was developed to track existing patterns of demand prior to adding forecasts of future demand. Results showed that a comprehensive transport strategy was necessary for the success of the Council’s long term vision, and that growth could not continue without it.

Our work was the foundation of a transport plan that has been the basis of increased transport funding from both the Central and European governments as well as catalyzed the promotion of Reading’s Transport Authority ranking from mid level to number one in the country within just two years.
