University Of Exeter – Geoffrey Pope Building. Conversion Into Bioscience Laboratories
A truly economically and environmentally sustainable development
Our advice on energy-efficient solutions is bringing cost-savings to the University of Exeter, as well as long-term environmental benefits.
The University of Exeter is converting its Geoffrey Pope building into bioscience laboratories. This required new amenities and an upgrade of the existing facilities. Challenges included satisfying the university’s energy efficiency policy and undertaking work while the building remained occupied and functioning – with no disruption to live science projects – during the refit.
Our years of experience in providing energy-efficient solutions provided the basis for significant cost savings and additional benefits to the client thanks to significant stakeholder consultation.
These solutions include: a new system that will cut energy use for lighting by almost 50%, a new transformer that will improve the efficiency of transmission, new widows and insulation as well as ventilation heat recovery that will reduce fuel demand. By converting the boiler facility from diesel oil to natural gas the university will save 718te of CO2 (equivalent to the annual emissions of nearly 200 family cars) and enough money to pay for itself in three years. Additionally, replacing the required external diesel oil storage with pipelined natural gas to the building will free up valuable university land for redevelopment.
