University of Reading ICMA Centre extension and new business school,
Reading, Berkshire, UK
Providing effective logistical planning based on solid safety principles.
A planned expansion of the University of Reading includes the extension of the International Capital Market Association (ICMA) Centre and construction of the New Business School. Peter Brett Associates LLP (PBA) is providing effective logistical planning based on solid safety principles.
On the university’s busy campus, these two projects face a number of safety and logistical issues from the limited traffic capacity of the site roads, the necessity to maintain functionality of the ICMA Centre and its surroundings, and the volumes of pedestrian traffic.
We took into account the effects on logistics that our safety measures may have, ensuring that they were pragmatic whilst meeting the site’s needs. Development was phased to ensure that neither campus roads nor the building site was congested with materials. Service diversions were programmed in with the construction of a new sub station whilst fire escapes and access routes were diverted and included construction of protected pedestrian paths. Disability access was maintained with the constructions of temporary ramps and bridges.
Our combination of solutions has ensured a safe and orderly site that has caused the least amount of disruption to the functioning of a busy campus whilst avoiding issues and accidents that could stop progress altogether.
